The dog always knows before you do. The bags come out, the car boot opens, and suddenly there’s a very excited Labrador sitting in the back seat refusing to move. For a lot of families, a holiday without the dog simply isn’t a holiday.
The trouble is finding somewhere that actually wants you both. Genuinely pet friendly hotels in Dharamshala are still fairly rare, and “pets allowed” on a booking site can mean anything from a warm welcome to a grudging nod and a long list of rules. Here’s how to plan a mountain trip that works for everyone, four legs included.

Cooler air, open space, forest smells and long walks with no traffic. For a city dog who spends most days on a leash between buildings, the Kangra Valley feels like a playground.
The altitude around Dharamshala and Palampur is moderate, so most healthy dogs adjust easily. Very young puppies, senior dogs and flat-faced breeds like pugs and bulldogs may tire faster, so it’s worth a quick word with your vet before you leave.
Summer is the sweet spot. While the plains swelter through May and June, days around Dharamshala stay pleasant, which is why so many dog owners from Delhi, Chandigarh and Punjab head up the hills at that time of year.
Plenty of properties accept pets. Far fewer are built for them. When you’re comparing pet friendly hotels in Dharamshala, ask a few direct questions before you book.
Is there open, safe green space where your dog can stretch its legs? Are pets allowed in the room, or banished to a kennel outside? Is there a per-night pet fee, and what’s included? Will the staff actually be comfortable around animals? That last one matters more than people think. A nervous team makes for a nervous dog. The best pet friendly hotels in Dharamshala will answer all of this without hesitation.
Standalone cottages tend to work better than rooms along a shared corridor. Your dog gets its own entrance, fewer strangers walk past, and you won’t spend the night worrying about barking.
By road is almost always the easiest option. It’s the most popular way of travelling with dogs to Himachal, and it lets you stop whenever your pet needs a break. From Delhi or Chandigarh, plan a stop every two to three hours for water, a short walk and a stretch.
Flying is possible, but domestic airline pet policies change often and can be restrictive. Check directly with the airline well in advance if you’re considering it. Trains are trickier still. For most people, the drive up becomes part of the adventure.
Some of the valley’s nicest experiences are perfect for dogs. Early-morning walks along the edges of tea estates are calm and shady. Village lanes around Jia are quiet and full of interesting smells. Riverside spots make a good place for a paddle once the water is gentle enough.
A few things to keep in mind. Temples and monasteries usually don’t allow animals inside, so plan those visits for when someone can stay out with the dog. Local street dogs can be territorial, so keep your pet leashed in villages. And during monsoon, check paws and coats for ticks after every walk.
The more responsible pet parents there are, the more places will open their doors to dogs. So clean up after your pet, keep them leashed in shared spaces, and don’t leave them alone in the room for long periods. It sounds obvious. Yet it’s the single biggest reason hotels end up changing their policies.
