Ask most people what they did in Dharamshala and you’ll hear two answers. McLeodganj, and the Triund trek. Both are lovely. They’re also crowded, and they barely scratch the surface of what this valley has to offer.
Base yourself for a few days in Jia, the quiet stretch between Dharamshala and Palampur, and a different side of the region opens up. Tea estates at sunrise. Temples carved from solid rock. A toy train that’s in no hurry at all. These are the things to do near Dharamshala that our guests come back and tell us about, often while their chai goes cold.

Palampur is often called the tea capital of north India, and Kangra tea has been grown on these slopes since the mid-1800s. Go early. The light is soft, the pickers are already out between the rows, and the Dhauladhars sit right behind the estates like a painted backdrop.
Several estates welcome visitors and some run small factory tours with tastings. Try the green tea. Kangra’s is lighter and more delicate than what most of us drink at home.
The narrow-gauge line between Pathankot and Jogindernagar opened back in 1929, and it still rattles along at a gentle pace through fields, tunnels and village stations. You don’t need to ride the whole route. A short stretch from Palampur towards Baijnath or Kangra gives you the best of it in an hour or two.
Sit on the side facing the mountains. You’ll thank us.
Just outside Palampur sits Andretta, a tiny artists’ village with a long creative history. Its pottery studio is the draw for most visitors, and you can often sit at the wheel yourself with some patient guidance. Your bowl will probably be wonky. That’s rather the point, and it makes a far better souvenir than anything from a gift shop.
The Kangra Valley is dense with history, and some of the most rewarding places to visit in Kangra Valley are the least hyped.
Start at Baijnath Temple, a Shiva temple dating back to the early 13th century with beautifully carved stone walls. Nearby, Tashi Jong is a peaceful Tibetan settlement and monastery where the loudest sound is usually the prayer wheels. Closer to Dharamshala, the Norbulingka Institute showcases Tibetan art and craft in a garden setting that’s worth a slow afternoon.
Then there’s Kangra Fort, one of the oldest forts in India, sitting high above the meeting of two rivers. And the Masroor Temples, a group of shrines carved out of a single rock around the 8th century. Standing in front of them, it’s hard to believe anyone attempted it, let alone finished. For history lovers, these rank among the most memorable things to do near Dharamshala.
If you want one adrenaline moment on the trip, make it Bir Billing. It’s one of the best-known paragliding sites in the world, and even first-timers can fly tandem with a certified pilot. The take-off at Billing sits high on the ridge. The landing in Bir is a gentle field surrounded by monasteries and cafes.
Is it scary? For about ten seconds. After that, most people just go quiet and look down. October and November usually bring the steadiest flying conditions, and mornings tend to be calmer than afternoons.
Triund gets all the attention, but you don’t need a full day on a busy trail to feel the mountains. From our side of the valley, the walk up to Sidh Baba Temple is a lovely half-morning outing with forest paths, birdsong and wide views on the way down. Village walks through Jia and the surrounding hamlets are gentler still, and you’ll likely be invited in for tea at least once. If you only have half a day, this is one of the easiest things to do near Dharamshala without packing any serious gear.

Here’s something most travel guides won’t say. Some of the best days in the mountains involve no plans at all.
A long breakfast in the courtyard. A spa treatment after lunch. A book under a tree while the light moves across the valley, then a bonfire and Kangri Dham under the stars. Honestly, it counts as one of the best things to do near Dharamshala, even if it won’t make a great Instagram reel.
Staying between Dharamshala and Palampur means you’re close to almost everything above without being stuck in McLeodganj traffic. Antaraal is a luxury resort in Dharamshala’s Jia Valley, just 15 km from town, with private cottages, a nature-led spa and a team that will happily help you plan every day trip on this list.
